House. Late C15 timber-framing encased in stone with C17 N
wall and C19 alterations. Coursed gritstone front wall, rear
and S side of brick, stone slate roof. 2 storeys and attic, 2
windows wide. Quoins. Central doorway with overlight, 4-pane
sashes. Left return: stone external stack with 2 moulded
string courses, widened to accommodate 1st floor fireplace and
latrine with 2 corbels.
INTERIOR: not inspected but record made 1985 shows 3 pairs of
principal posts, bressumer and wallplate with short straight
braces, cross-wall close-studded on 1st floor, 2 king-post
trusses, ridge with longitudinal brace.
The house and barn were first built by the Beeston family,
lords of the manor of Beeston, when they established a hunting
park here in the later C15. It was known then as 'New Hall',
to distinguish it from their manor house in Beeston village;
this name was later transferred to the Hodgson's new block
(qv) which was originally attached. C19 alterations by the
Denison and Beckett families resulted in the creation of 2
tenanted houses.
