Memorial in Hunslet Cemetery

GV II

Memorial. 1885. Ashlar and carved stone. Approx 4m high,
3-stage base, plinth, tapering square shaft with inscription,
band with paterae, pedimented capstone surmounted by kneeling
draped female figure. Inscription: 'IN/ MEMORY OF/ EMILY
WHITTAKER/ AGED 30 YEARS/ MARY ELLEN TAYLOR/ AGED 26 YEARS/
MARY DODGSON/ AGED 23 YEARS/ ELIZABETH ANN FISHER/ AGED 21
YEARS/ ALSO ELIZABETH WESTERMAN/ AGED 41 YEARS/ INTERRED AT
BURMANTOFTS CEMETERY/ ALSO/ SARAH ANN LEVITT/ AGED 21 YEARS/
INTERRED AT BEESTON HILL CEMETERY/ WHO MET THEIR DEATHS BY/
THE FALL OF A CUT NAIL WORKS/ AT HUNSLET JULY 1ST 1885/ 'IN
THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH''.
On the plinth a framed inscription records the fact that the
stone was erected by voluntary subscription in the various cut
nail works at Leeds, Staleybridge, Middlesbro' and Glasgow, as
a token of respect to the memory of co-workers who lost their
lives whilst following their occupation at Messrs Inghams and
Co, Hunslet.
