Lower Stone House Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17 with mid-C19 alterations and extensions. Large coursed dressed and squared stone blocks, tiled roof; verge parapets to west only; end stack also to west. Two storeys and cellar, three window front; composition inset to right of four-, two- and three-light chamfer mullioned windows, the four-light (probably formerly of three) with only one stone mullion remaining, the ground floor windows are all at different levels and all but the centre two lights are large C20 windows in enlarged openings; right-hand windows raised over two- and three-light mullioned cellar windows set at ground level; boarded entrance to left end. Mid-C19 part timber framed bay addition to east end. Massive stack to rear with two diagonal shafts.
Interior: door opens against heck of massive fireplace with fire window and salt niche to fireback and chamfered firebeam; massive breast continued to first floor. Spiral stairs to cellar which has heavy sandstone cheese shelves; internal partitions in timber framing. Simple queen post roof trusses with windbraces.
