Little Aston

Lodge. Circa early C19. Painted brick. Hipped roof probably originally thatched,
clad in blue fishscale tiles and with lead rolls to hips and ridge. Central axial
stack with narrow shaft on each side.

Rectangular cottage orne, with central lobby entrance, double depth room on left and
kitchen on right with small service room behind. C20 extension on rear left.

1 storey. 3-bay front. The roof is carried down over deep eaves at front and
verandah at sides and rear supported on round wooden columns with scalloped cushion
capitals; at the corners the columns have clustered shafts. Similar clustered
columns with cushion capitals to gabled porch at centre of front, probably
originally open, but now boarded in and with tiled gable and plank door. To left
and right of porch C19 moulded wooden mullion-transom window the centre light with
metal casement. Larger 3-light casement on right side and French casement on left
side with glazing bars; both side windows have roof lights above. Large C20
weatherboarded extension at rear.

Interior: Right hand room, kitchen, has brick fireplace with iron range, mantel
shelf and tall narrow flanking cupboards. Left hand room has smaller fireplace with
iron grate. C19 joinery including panelled doors and cupboard doors.

Note: This was probably a lodge to Little Aston Hall (8/47) qv an early C18 house
remodelled in 1790 by James Wyatt and again in 1857-9 by Edward J Payne of
Birmingham, for Colonel Swynfen Parker-Jarvis.
