Large house, c.1770. Red brick, black unglazed pantiles. 5 bays, double
depth plus rear wings to left and right. Symmetrical south front: 2 storeys,
central pediment, wide eaves with modillions, hipped roof, wide stacks to
centre left and centre right, that to left rebuilt; 9 pane sashes with
glazing bars under flat arches, stone sills, 4 each to ground and first
floor, sash to centre bay first floor, central doorway, door of 6 raised
and fielded panels, flanked by fluted columns, fanlight above with glazing
bars; open porch with plain entablature across fanlight, 2 plain Doric
columns to front, 2 square Doric pilasters to rear. East facade of 5 bays:
1st bay of front range breaks forward; 9 paned sash windows with glazing
bars to first floor, sashes to ground floor, that to lst bay dummy; doorway
to 4th bay with 6 paned sash above. West facade of 5 bays, varied fenestra-
tion including two early C20 oriel windows with hung tiles, single width
to first bay and double width to bays 2 and 3; sashes to first floor; 2
large tripartite sashes to bays 3 and 4 of ground floor, 2 flat roofed roof
dormers with casements to bays 1 and 2. Some flint in rear wings to north,
wide internal end stacks. Interior: hall with groined vaulted roof, double
leaved interior door to staircase at rear with upper part glazed having
margin lights, flanking reeded pilasters; open well open string staircase,
ramped moulded mahogony handrail with thumb groove to one side, ivory inset
to wreathed rail above turned newel having reeded base and spiral decoration,
turned balusters, similar balusters to first floor gallery behind stairwell.
Doors with two long panels having truncatated corners. Front room to west
with plaster frieze and skirting board with wave pattern. Single storey to
west at front of no special interest.
