Formerly Bishop Hall's Palace, now an Inn. 1587 (?) for
Richard Brown, possibly incorporating earlier features. 1595 formerly
on gable (Pevsner); 1615 on right wing. Much C20 restoration after war
damage. Knapped flint studded with stones and with ashlar dressings;
brick details to left gable-fronted wing; flint and brick rubble on left
side wall under C20 applied timberwork. Plain tile roof (pantiled to left);
3 brick chimneys (rebuilt). L-plan. 2 storeys; 5 first-floor windows to
right wing; left wing has 2 storeys and attic. Central C20 ribbed and
studded door retains its C17 moulded 4-centred arch and pediment under a
C20 tiled porch. Canted 2-storey bays to right and left have 3-light
stone mullioned and transomed windows (mostly restored) flanked by
similar smaller windows with hood moulds. Stone coping to parapet.
Left wing has C20 wooden mullioned and transomed windows with leaded
casements and 2 small mediaeval-style windows with brick dressings (repaired)
in gable front. 2 angle buttresses (1960 on stone).Initials B/R (repaired) in
brick diaper. Interior (not inspected during re-survey) is noted as having
C16 mantelpiece and carvings, N. Pevsner, Buildings of England:
North East Norfolk and Norwich, Harmondsworth 1962, 284.
