23/283 Chimney on west
side of B6341,
100 metres north-
north-west of
Cragside Park House
GV II
Chimney. Third quarter of C19, for Lord Armstrong. Cut stone, with yellow
brick furnace arch. Square base with moulded corners and furnace arch to
south-east, carrying circular shaft with moulded top. Overall height c.7
metres.
This chimney, along with a second (q.v.) further up the hill, was part of
an elaborate ventilation system for Lord Armstrong's conservatory (q.v.);
a fire lit at the base of each chimney would draw smoky air up a long
underground flue away from the heating apparatus beneath the conservatory.
