House. Late C17, incorporating masonry of an earlier build and
with C18 and C19 alterations. Red brick and coursed rubble, with
projecting brick quoins. Tile roof to southern wing, slate to
northern. 2 central rendered stacks each consisting of 3
diagonally set shafts. The northern wing has 2 red brick gable
stacks set diagonally. Raised gables with kneelers, these are
coped with brick to the south and ashlar to the north. Double-
pile, 2 storeys plus garret, 5 bays with a first floor brick
band. Ground floor openings have brick surrounds, the infill
being coursed rubble. The first floor is of brick. South side
has a central doorway with wooden door and over light lacking
glazing. To the right are 2 window openings and to the left 2
low window openings, all formerly glazing bar sashes. Above is a
central glazing bar sash with 2 similar larger sashes either
side. All lacking most of their glazing. All openings have
flush wedge lintels. Both garrets have single bullseye window
openings. The northern wing of 5 bays is set on a coursed rubble
plinth. 5 glazing bar sashes, the brick surrounds formed to
suggest lugged architraves. Above are 5 similar smaller sashes.
All lack glazing and most glazing bars and have flush wedge brick
lintels. The left 2 bays have single blocked basement openings.
Interior. East-west wall is of coursed rubble and is of an
earlier build. There is an inserted C17 dog-leg staircase
retaining some cut balusters. Set on a moated site reputed to
replace a royal hunting lodge.
