9/28 The Orchard and Orchard

House and cottage. Late C17; cottage C18. House is of coursed limestone
rubble with timber lintels; thatched roof with brick stacks, 3-unit lobby-entry
plan at right-angles to road. One storey plus attics. Entrance front
now largely obscured by C20 weatherboarded lean-to but has remains of ovolo-
moulded wooden casement to extreme left. Left gable wall has 3-light ovolo-
moulded casement. Windows generally renewed and altered. Roof half-hipped to
right. Interior: 2 stairs, one a winder between lobby and central stack;
chamfered and stopped beams; bolection-mould fireplace in bedroom; lead
pump. Cottage if of coursed rubble and brick; old plain-tile roof. Single-
unit with rear outshut. 2 storeys. 2 window front, flush with gable of
house, with plank door and 2-light casement to right under flat stone arches.
Arches have a narrow roll-mould and continue as a band across the front.
First floor in Flemish-bond brickwork with flared headers and dentil
eaves-course. Two 2-light small-pane casements with segmental arched heads.
