5/113 Great Fernhill Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Mid-C17, extended late C18 with later additions and alterations.
Red brick (mixed bond); hipped graded slate roof. Large rectangular block
with twin full-height gables and C18 gabled addition to rear. 2 storeys with
carved sprocketed eaves to main range; attics and cellar. Late C19 mullioned
and transomed wooden windows, one to either side of and 3 between large stacks
to front wall, those to first floor directly below eaves and those to ground
floor in partly infilled segmental-headed openings; blind and painted in imitation
to upper and lower left. Central entrance; segmental-headed 4-panel door with
rectangular barred overlight. Prominent stepped external lateral stacks to
left and right with miniature gables behind have tops rebuilt in C19 yellow
brick. 3-bay left return has toothed floor band and pilaster strip between
centre and right bays; C19 mullioned and transomed windows, upper centre blind
and those to ground floor in partly infilled segmental-headed openings. C19
single-storey brick lean-to against right return. Twin gables to rear have
graded slate hanging to top storey, left gable (housing staircase) with infilled
mullioned window to left wall to top and right gable with external end stack.
Lower C18 gabled range at junction between twin gables has dentilled eaves cornice
and narrow external end stack. Rear wall of main block has 2 infilled square-
headed windows to first floor and two 16-paned glazing bar sashes under open
lean-to to ground floor. Interior. Open-well staircase rising from ground
floor to attic has moulded handrail, carved newel-posts and barleysugar balusters.
Vertical posts exposed to partition walls on first floor and chamfered ceiling
beams and ledged and braced doors throughout. Barrel-vaulted brick cellar.
