Description

KINNERLEY C.P. -

11/2 Farm Hall

Farmhouse. Mainly late C17 but probably incorporating parts of a late C16
building. Red brick (mixed and Flemish bonds), possibly replacing timber
frame on rendered sandstone rubble plinth. Stone angle quoins, partly cement-
rendered, to right and slate roof. Apparently originally a hall and cross-
wing plan with hall range aligned north-east to south-west and cross-wing
projecting to left. Roof of cross-wing demolished in late C17 when building
was refronted and roofed in one alignment. 2 storeys with stepped eaves
cornice and cellar to right. Right part (former hall range) has roughly
central early C20 panelled door under C20 gabled porch with unevenly spaced
multi-paned C19 cast-iron casements to left and right, those to ground floor
segmental headed and those to first floor directly below eaves. Similar
C19 casement with wooden lintel to lean-to to left with boarded door to far
left. Integral end stack in front of ridge directly above. Lean-to bread
oven projection to left with cast-iron sink attached to front. External
end stack to right of main range has stone angle quoins; infilled segmental-
headed window to attic. 2 catslide outshuts to left and right to rear and
external lateral stack to left of centre with upper stage corbelled out to
right and tall rebuilt shaft. Corbelling to left visible internally showing
that left outshut must be later addition. Left outshut has stone quoins
to right corner with infilled 2-light chamfered wooden mullion window to centre
and infilled window to plinth. Interior. Deep-chamfered cross-beam ceiling
and heavy chamfered joists, both with straight-cut stops, to left ground-
floor room including to front lean-to. Inglenook fireplace to left with
chamfered wooden lintel. Oak winder staircase to rear right corner of outshut
has timber frame exposed in wall to left. Centre and right rooms have deep-
chamfered ceiling beams and partly infilled inglenook fireplace with chamfered
wooden lintel to back wall. C17 rectangular oak panelling to right wall
of centre room said to have been brought from elsewhere. Hall has panelled
board to back wall with painted heraldic emblems. Apparently truncated wall
post or cruck blade concealed by wall paper to left and another in correspond-
ing position to first floor. First floor has timber frame fragmentarily
exposed throughout to cross walls: square panels and close studding with
segmental-headed doorway to spine wall in left room. Wide boarded oak floor
boards. Plank doors throughout including several with reused C17 panelling.
Restructured queen-post roof in 4 bays.
