House. Late C17, probably incorporating parts of an earlier building;
later additions and alterations. Red brick (mixed bond) possibly replacing
or encasing timber frame; slate roof. L-plan with 2-bay cross-wing
projecting to left. 2 storeys and attic. 1:2 windows, C19 metal
casements, some with leaded lights, and C20 casements in imitation.
C20 gabled eaves dormer to left bay of main range. Entrance now through
C20 glazed door in right wall of cross-wing but right window in main
range is in position of infilled doorway. Prominent external lateral
stack to left of cross-wing has projecting strips and toothed band to
top of base, which is partly rubblestone; top of shaft rebuilt in early
C20 red brick. Integral end stack to right of main range. Interior.
Deep-chamfered spine and cross beams to ground-floor room of hall range,
which has probably reused richly moulded segmental wooden lintel to
inglenook fireplace. Timber frame (mainly square panels) exposed to
wall separating hall range from cross-wing and also to dividing wall
between 2 rooms of cross-wing. Front room has deep-chamfered cross
beam and rear room has elaborately moulded ceiling beams and chamfered
joists. Part of plank and muntin screen visible to right side of
wall dividing 2 rooms of cross-wing (in back room) with position of
infilled hatch or window visible to left. Late C17 staircase in hall
range with right-angled turn to left has decorated carved splat balusters
and moulded handrail. Timber frame exposed to cross walls on first
floor, which has wide boarded oak floor boards. Roof of cross-wing
in 2 bays but central truss plastered over at time of resurvey (October
1986).
