House. Early to mid C18 with C19 remodelling and front. White
brick and a black glazed pantiled roof with wood mutule eaves
soffit and plain stucco cornice.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and cellar. 5 window range: 12-pane sashes
in plain reveals with flat gauged arches. A moulded stucco
band runs between the storeys. On the ground storey a wide
projecting pedimented porch has pairs of square pillars with
responding pilasters and a fluted architrave. The entrance
door has 6 sunk panels and is flanked by 2 narrow 6-pane
windows.
Complex fenestration to the rear, including 6 12-pane sash
windows in flush cased frames and 3 wide full-length 12-pane
tripartite sashes with diminished side lights and
segmental-arched heads, one with the side lights boarded. 3
dormers, one blank, in the rear slope of the roof. At the
north end, part of the ground storey wall is in flint and red
brick.
INTERIOR: cellar below north side of house in 2 linked
brick-lined and vaulted ranges, one with a fine double row of
numbered wine bins. The interior retains several good C18
fireplaces with carved and eared architraves, notably in the
large rear upper drawing room, which also has a good ornate
moulded plaster centrepiece to the ceiling.
The large entrance hall was remodelled in the early C19 and
has a geometric stair with balustrade: stick balusters, ramped
and wreathed handrail and open strings with fluted carving.
Floor paved with limestone flags. The shallow-pitched attic
roof has very large principal rafters.
