House, now divided into 2 dwellings. Late C16 with C17 rear wing. Timber framed
with plastered infill panels and some brick replacement; sandstone plinth;
plain-tile roof; brick central stack. 2-cell range aligned north-south facing
west with rear wing on an east-west alignment and a later cross-wing at the
south end. One storey and attic. Close studding with middle rail and straight
braces. 3 C20 ground floor windows of unequal size, 2 blocked windows
immediately below the eaves, and a C20 gabled dormer to the right. C20 stable
type door to the right, beneath a bracketed flat hood. The left hand gable end
retains close studded wall framing and double collar roof truss with king strut
and herringbone pattern bracing, carrying one pair of trenched purlins. The rear
wing (Kendal Cottage) has 2 tiers of large panels with painted brick infill;
plain-tile roof; brick external end stack. One storey and attic. 2 flat roofed
dormers. Interior: the main house (The Mound) has cross beams with wide stopped
chamfers. Large open fireplace in the southern room of sandstone and brick with
timber bressumer; timber-framed smoke hood above. Exposed central roof truss
with raking queen struts and a central vertical strut between tie beam and
collar. The tie beam is arched over a doorway which is the only means of
communication between the two attic rooms.
