5/14 Barn at Alto Priors Farm

GV II

Barn and smithy, now workshop. Early C19. Timber framed and
weatherboarding, with slate roof. Seven bays, with aisles, the
centre threshing bay wider. Aisle posts on dwarf brick walls, some
repaired. Curved braces to arcade plates and to heavy tie beams.
Small struts to principal rafters, and collars. Outer posts to the
narrow aisle jowled. In penultimate western bay a freestanding
brick forge with two hearths, the aisle bays fitted with work
benches. Bellows, quenching tanks, anvil and blacksmiths' tools
all present, also two hand operated vertical drills. Eastern bays
divided off as engineering workshop.
