Late C18, with C16 annexe. Main Building: Ashlar, modern pantile roof.
Square in plan, 3 storeys, 5 windows in front elevation. Centre portion
breaks forward slightly, dentilled pediment over. Plain string at 1st
floor level, moulded and dentilled cornice and plain parapet. All windows
double-hung sashes with glazing bars. Ground floor windows in plain reveals;
1st floor windows architrave surrounds and flat, moulded cornices, cut
stone brackets under sills. Two windows in centre portion have pediments
2nd floor windows have architrave surrounds. Semi-circular-headed centre
doorway with keystone and imposts, fanlight with glazing bars. Stone
doorcase with Tuscan 3/4 columns on plinths, entablature and pediment.
Plinth course all round, four steps up to door. Annexe: C16. On right
and to rear of main building. Oblong in plan, stone-tiled roof, 2 storeys
some stone-mullioned windows. Exterior considerably restored. Interior
has good original oak-timbered ceilings with moulded beams and close rafters.
Several 4-centred arch doorways with chamfered mouldings and four open
stone fireplaces with flattened pointed arches.
All the listed buildings in Church Street the Chantry Little Chantry,
Barton Orchard and the Catholic Church of St Thomas More, Market Street
form a group with Nos 7 and 9 to 19 Barton Orchard, Nos 5 and 6 and 27
to 31 (consec) and wall Newtown.
