5/166 Barn at Manor Farm
GV II*
Barn. Probably C16. Rubble stone plinth c.1.9m high to timber-
framed walls clad with weatherboarding, corrugated iron roof,
formerly thatched. Seven bays, the centre three with base crucks,
the flanking bays aisled. Large raking porch on north side with
double planked doors, early C19 lean-to extensions either side with
Welsh slate roofs, south side has blocked cart entry, stable doors
and shuttered windows, left return has inserted opening with double
planked doors. Unusual arrangement of bays whereby aisle posts
are avoided in the centre bays by the use of two raised base cruck
trusses arch-braced to main collar, clasped purlins are held by
upper collars, curved windbracing to purlins and arcade plates.
The three flanking bays each have two trusses with aisle posts
supporting arcade plates and tie-beams, but raised crucks to sides,
the same arrangement of clasped purlins and two tiers of curved
windbracing is used throughout, together with curved bracing from
aisle posts to tie beams. The east of two cruck trusses has wattle
holes on soffits of collar and bracing; indicating a formerly
closed truss.
