7/31 The Cottage and Rose Cottage

Pair of estate cottages, c1850, probably by J. Thomson for J. Neeld
of Grittleton. Rubble stone with imitation stone slate half-hipped
roof and centre ridge stack. Two storeys, 2-window range with
triple casements below and triangular oriels above under eaves
dormer gables. Pennant stone unmoulded details: ground floor
sills and hoodmoulds, string course and brackets and slab bases to
upper oriels. Oriels have casements each side and imitation stone
slate roofs extending into dormer gables. End walls have half-
hipped lean-to enclosed porches and square oriels above. Parallel
rear range with end-wall triangular oriels on pennant stone
brackets. Included for group value.
