3/14 Nos. 138 and 140
-
- II

Cruck-framed cottages, probably C17, original number not known but now
2 cottages. No.140 which has been thoroughly but harmoniously modernised,
is included in the item because it contains important elements of the
original timber structure. No. 138: brick, thatched roof covered by red
corrugated sheet, boarded eaves. Baffle-entry plan of 3½ bays. Single
storey;central doorway, one 2-light window each side, and a single-light
window at left end. Now has no chimney, but interior stack is central.
Interior: 3 full cruck-trusses; ridge and purlins (overlapped on cruck
blades) of large scantling, one windbrace to purlin in each of 2 middle
bays; collar with kingpost c. one metre in front of chimney-breast in
housepart, cross wall at lower end of housepart infilled with mud; 3rd
bay has been raised from the hip or lengthened. In No.140 cruck-frame
and purlins continue, one full cruck truss remaining, and one cruck truss
at the left end severed above the tie suggesting originally hipped end to
