2/5 Church of All Saints
29.12.66
GV II*
Parish Church. Largely C13 to C14 but extensively restored in C19. Coursed
ironstone rubble, with Welsh slate roofs. West tower, nave and chancel. Tower
is of 3 stages, with plate traceried paired lights in west wall and to bell
chamber, and squat spire with lucarnes recessed behind embattled parapet.
Western end of nave is of poorly coursed rubble with one lancet window. Victorian
gabled porch with round arched doorway. Inner door is a curious, possibly
C16 or C17,feature: a shouldered opening is recessed behind an outer arch,
also shouldered, but the detail elaborated to a double curved head. Carved
face above. Eastern bays of nave rebuilt in C19, squared rubble with 2-light
square headed windows with drop ended hoodmoulds. Eastern buttress and coped
gable. Chancel is again of poorly coursed rubble with plinth and angle quoins.
Possible blocked south window and Victorian east window, 3-lights of reticulated
tracery. Victorian north vestry.
Inside, little medieval detail survives. Roll moulded west tower arch. Victorian
scissor braced nave roof. Simple chancel arch, double chamfered on chamfered
responds. In the chancel the reredos is of 1928, and there is some C20 stained
glass in the east window. Font is C15, octagonal on 4 shafts, each face a
traceried panel. C19 Charity board in nave.
