Originally 1 house of about 1690. 2 storeys attic and basement, 9 windows.
Fairly high pitched roof, now slated, with C18 cyma bracketed eaves cornice.
Red brick with stone dressings. Slightly projecting 5-bay centrepiece with
stone rusticated quoins. 2-window North extension added early C18. Stone
lst floor band and plinth band. Gauged flat brick window arches have stone keys
with carved masks. Replaced sash windows with glazing bars in flush, moulded
frames. No 21, of 6 windows, has 5 stone steps to small terrace before door
of 6 fielded panels, with 2 matching fielded panels in frame above. Stone
doorcase with carved frieze and console bracketed cornice. Inside wide hall
with checker-board marble floor. Wide oak staircase with shallow treads,
slightly bulbous turned balusters, wide ramped handrail and double square
newel posts with arched panels. Entablature with pulvinated frieze on string
of lower flight, guilloche moulding on string above. Hall has rich plaster
cornice and panels with rich borders. 2 ground floor rooms with ornamental
plasterwork. No 23 has 6 replaced steps to later door in doorcase with plain
pulvinated frieze. Much altered inside, but some original woodwork and 1
bolection moulded corner fireplace remain. Rear elevation similar but with
projecting side wings. RCHM.
