Description

NORBURY C.P. GAUNTONS BANK
SJ 54 NE
2/76 Brook Farmhouse
-
- II
Farmhouse. Later C16/early C17 with C19 addition. Timber framed with
brick infill and plain tile roof. Two storeys. Baffle-entry plan.
Entrance front: 4 bays, the two at right of earlier date than those
to left but all refaced in the Cl9. The right hand two bays have a
central C20 doorway with gabled porch above and to either side are
3-light casement windows with cambered heads which are now blocked to
form flat lintels. Two 3-light casement windows to the first floor.
To left at ground floor level are two 2-light windows with cambered
heads which are now blocked to create flat lintels and two 2-light
casements also to first floor. Chimney stack to left of centre of
ridge. The right hand gable end has a central chimney stack of brick
with offsets and two vestigial horizontal beams to the lower walling.
Truss to gable has cambered tie beam and vertical struts above.
Rear: to left is brick walling of the later addition with a C20
lean-to single-storey outshut to the lower wall. At left of this is a
jowelled corner post indicating the original termination of the
building. To left of this are 8 x 2 cells of small framing apparently
of late C16 date the framing originally extending lower but replaced
by brickwork. To the far left are 3 further cells of uneven small
framing which appears to be of a late C17 or early C18 date, replacing
earlier framing.
Interior: Chamfered ceiling beams to the kitchen, one of which
appears to have been brought from elsewhere. Chamfered ceiling beams
and ingle-nook fireplace to the parlour, with chamfered bressumer. To
the first floor are two trusses with cambered tie beams supporting a
series of vertical posts.
