Town house facing Devonshire Street. c.1905 (by Elgood or Tatchell?). Red brick
with stone dressings; tiled roof, Queen Anne style "villa". 2 storeys, basement and
dormered attic 3-window centre and slightly advanced pediment-gabled wings each with
2 windows on 1st floor and rectangular bay on ground floor. Off-centre doorway with
short engaged columns and enriched console-brackets to semicircular hood. Tripartite
flush framed glazing bar sash window, to right of doorway, with pulvinated cornice;
3 evenly spaced flush framed glazing bar sashes under segmental keystoned arches and
with apron panels to 1st floor and 3 corniced dormers above. The rectangular bay
windows of wings have tripartite sashes and the 1st floor windows match those in
centre; 3-light lunettes with voussoirs and keystones in pediment-gables. Queen Anne
style cast iron area railings. Part of early C20 attempt by the Portland Estate to
restore the domestic character of th area deemed to have become too professional. The
house was the residence of the playwright Sir Arthur Pinero from 1909 to his death in
1934 (G L C plaque).
