Designed by Decimus Burton circa 1830, or otherwise built as part of James Burton's
layout of St Leonards in 1828 as the north gate of the Subscription Garden, now
St Leonards Gardens, with 2 lodges for the occupation of gardeners, but now converted
into private residences of which No 16 has been enlarged. Sandstone ashlar. The
building consists of a high moulded Tudor arch carriageway with recessed moulded
spandrels, surmounted by a shield. Above this is a room with a casement window
of 3 lights with dripmould over and embattled parapet above. On each side of the
gate is a lodge of 3 storeys and 1 window with embattled parapet over. 3-light
casement windows with dripstone over on the let floor of each lodge. Other windows
are 2-light casements. Buttresses at the angles. No 17 has a small 2-storey later
C19 addition to the west roughly in the same style as the Lodge with splayed porch
with 4-centred arch, but fronted with cement and surmounted by a plain parapet.
No 16 a modern and rather incongruous addition which is 2-storeyed and rendered.
