1/1 Church of St. Mary
27.11.54
I
Parish church. Medieval. Nave, chancel, west tower. Flint rubble with stone
dressings; continuous thatched roof. The lower third of the tower is round,
with a lancet west window; the upper part is octagonal, with red brick angles
and brick lancet belfry openings to each face. Crenellated parapet. Both
parts of the tower are a rebuilding, probably of the early C16. The nave is
C13: some original lancet windows and 2-light windows in Perpendicular style.
Simple double-chamfered south doorway; north doorway bricked-up. Late C13
chancel, re-faced in mid C19. Original lancet and Y-traceried windows to
north and south, and a 4-light east window in matching style, apparently
renewed mid C19. Interior. No chancel arch. Coupled rafter roof to nave,
many of the trusses probably medieval. Mid C19 boarded ceiling to chancel.
In the sanctuary a trefoil-arched piscina and drop-sill sedilia. Rood loft
stair in south wall of nave. Square font of Purbeck marble, C12 or C13, with
small remains of decoration; there is a round shaft and 4 turned wooden corner
supports, probably added in C16 or C17. Mid and late C19 furnishings. 3
consecration crosses are visible on the walls, 2 in the nave and one in the
chancel.
