2/27 Poplar Farmhouse

GV II
Farmhouse. Mid C16. Timber framed. Ground floor cased in red brick,
colourwashed at the front. Upper floor has old plaster with small remains of
panelled work. Roof of old clay plaintiles. 2-cell form. 2 storeys and
attic. 3 windows, various casements, mostly old; 2 windows to upper floor
retain square-leaded glass. To left is C19 colourwashed brick gabled porch
with scalloped bargeboards; 6-panel door, the upper 2 panels glazed. Within
the porch is an older door with 6 raised and fielded panels. Internal stack
with axial red brick shaft. Later, smaller stack to left, just to rear of the
roof ridge. Lean-to additions on each gable end with steeply-pitched roofs.
Interior. On the ground floor both rooms have roll-moulded bridging beams and
chamfered joists. Good fully-moulded C16 door by stack in parlour (to right).
Close studding on upper floor with reverse-curved braces at the corners.
Original window openings have deep sills. Left cell has original attic floor
with chamfered joists. C16 newel stair (2 flights). Queen-post roof, all
bracing missing. Rafters re-set on edge, with a ridge piece. A valuable
example of a good quality C16 farmhouse which has not been heavily restored.
