House and bank. An early C16 range fronting the street (the ground floor of
which comprises No.7) with C15 carriage entrance adjacent. Later C16 wing to
rear. Timber framed, old panelled plasterwork to upper floor. Plaintiled
roofs. 2 storeys. No.7 has 2 single-paned tripartite sash windows flanked by
pilaster strips; central pilastered doorway with 6-panel door; continuous
frieze and cornice. On upper floor, 2 sash windows with glazing bars.
Carriage entrance to right is contemporary with No.9 (qv. Item 6/84), but
forms part of No.7A. It is supported on an arched-braced embattled beam.
Posts each side have carved buttress-shafts with solid brackets supporting the
jettied loft above. At the foot of each post is a mortice for a brace which
guarded against accidental damage to the structure. Rear wing: 2 diamond-
mullioned windows, others exposed inside; internal stack with C19 red brick
shaft. Interior. Upper floor of front range has intact framing with sill of
oriel window. Remains of original roof: chamfered crown-post over centre with
2-way bracing to collar purlin. Most of rafter trusses altered and butt
purlins inserted. This crown-post roof extended over the earlier carriage
entrance. 2-cell rear wing: substantially intact frame, butt purlin roof;
newel stair; front cell has cross-beamed ceiling, 2 of the compartments with
C17 Tudor rose, fleur-de-lys and foliage motifs.
