Description

SOUTHOLT BIG GREEN
TM 16 NE
4/61 Sycamore Farmhouse
- II
Former farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. In 2 sections: to south is a C16 range,
raised and re-roofed in later C17; to north is an early C17 parlour cross-
wing. Timber framed and plastered with roof of concrete plaintiles. 2
storeys with attic to wing. Windows mainly mid C20 casements without glazing
bars. North gable of cross-wing has an C18 mullion and transom window with
some old diamond-leaded glass. At the junction of the 2 sections is a C19
doorway: 4-panel raised and fielded door, the panels with moulded surrounds;
oblong overlight. South range has 2 internal stacks with mid C20 shafts, one
at the junction with the wing. To south is a single-storey plastered addition
with boarded entrance door. South range in 3 bays, perhaps comprising a hall
and service cell, with some heavy close studding and tension braces. The
stack at the south end is a later insertion. Parlour end has most of
structure concealed; this section may have originally been an in-line
addition, later enlarged to form a cross-wing.
