House. C15, C16, C17, mid C19 and early C20. Mixed walling; roughcast east front
with plinth, some exposure of timber frame, part close-studding with ironstone
(some herringbone) infill, other framing with brick infill, sandstone rubble with
brick dressings, 1st floor tile-hung in part (with some scalloped bands). Tile
roof, gabled, hipped and half-hipped. Late-medieval timber-framed hall with
2-storeyed cross-wing at the south end, with insertion of a massive chimney and 1st
floors in the hall part, refronted c.1800, with a mid c19 lower and shorter
2-storeyed block attached in parallel, single-storeyed L-shaped narrow north wing
(c.1900) incorporating a wide through entrance into a cobbled small forecourt.
East elevation of 2 storeys, 4 windows; triple sashes (one small casement above the
doorway), late C19 half-glazed door in a plain frame. Other elevations irregular,
of 2 storeys, with an attic to the south cross-wing and small casements. Open
porch (c.1900) with a tiled canopy on rustic poles. The massive framework is
exposed inside, with large arch braces to walls and purlins and to the main tie
beam; chimney-breast with bressummer: the framework of a staircase (c.1600) pro-
jection is now enclosed in the mid c19 block. The Tudor south stacks of brickwork
has offsets with stepped outer walling. The c.1900 store and portico block has a
tiled roof and stone walls.
