The bridge crosses the canalised overflow stream, issuing from the south
side of the dam of a reservoir constructed circa 1200 by the Bishop of
Winchester (Godfrey de Lucy 1189-1204), to supply water to a navigation on
the River Itchen. C14, early C19. The north face has a single pointed arch,
of cut stone rebated roussoirs, and on its west side is a stepped buttress.
Other walling is of stone rubble up to road level, and above this is a brick
parapet with a weathered stone (original, re-used) capping. Widened on the
south face in the later period, with brick walling and parapet. Scheduled
Ancient Monument.
