30-JAN-03 Pratt Monument, Arnos Vale Cemetery
GV II
Tomb of the Rev. John Adey Pratt (d.1867).
Marble obelisk an a square pedestal, on a stepped base. Signed Tyley, Bristol. The main inscription is on the north side; on the front (east) side is a relief of a seated man instructing a group of children; a celestial ray, to which the figure gestures, beams down divine inspiration.
HISTORY: Pratt was a prominent Bristol Nonconformist divine, known as 'the Children's Preacher'; he is also described here as 'the unwearied Servant of Sunday Schools'. He was the pastor of the Kingsland Chapel in Bristol, and this monument was erected by Sunday Schools of the City. A very interesting memorial, prominently located near the entrance to the cemetery, which is a fine illustration of the High Victorian Evangelical Movement.
