GV II

Headstone of P.C. Richard Hill (d.1869)
Grey Pennant stone headstone. Segmental head, pierced panel to centre with quatrefoils and four-armed stars. Epitaph in Gothic lettering.
HISTORY: Hill was 'a Police Constable of the City of Bristol who was murdered whilst in the execution of his duty in Gloucester Lane 26th April 1869 aged 31 years'. The epitaph is a late example of a memento mori verse: 'What is man's life, 'tis as a flower / Looks fresh and dies within an hour / How frail is man - how short his breath / In the midst of life we are in death'. Listed for its visual and historic interest.
