Holmwood House
II* (star)
Small country house. 1893. Designed by Temple Moore.Brick with rough cast render,
and ashlar dressings. Slate roof with 5 red brick stacks. Ashlar quoins.2 storey
plus attic and basement. South west front, of 6 bays, with ashlar plinth, moulded
first floor band, and wooden bracketed cornice. Off-centre doorway, with part
glazed double doors, in lower half of ashlar window surround, the upper part has
ashlar mullion and leaded lights, to the right a single and to the left 4 ashlar
cross mullion windows with leaded lights.
Above 6 smaller ashlar cross mullioned windows again with leaded lights. The
north west front of 5 bays with various single light basement windows with ashlar
surrounds and above 4 ashlar cross mullion windows, and 3 smaller similar windows
above. The south east front is similar though the fenestration is more irregular.
The north east entrance front, which is topped by 3 gables with ashlar coping,
finials and kneelers. The central doorway has a round arched ashlar surround
decorated with carved figures at impost and Keystones, the door is boarded over.
Above is a huge 15 light cross mullion window which lights the stairs, The remain-
ing windows are 2 and 3 light mullion windows extremely irregularly spaced. INTERIOR
Central full height panelled staircase hall with 3 flight stair, with bulbows
balusters, and Doric columns surrounding upper landing, above is a circular cupola
which Lights the stairwell. Fully panelled Drawing Room and Library, plus many
other panelled rooms all with contemporary fireplaces and ceilings.
