House, used as rectory, now hotel. C17, remodelled c1812 with mid-C19
alterations and additions. Brick (partly handmade) stuccoed to front;
slate roof of very heavy graduated slates and with parapets and urn
finials at gable ends to front; plain tiled roofs to rear main part and
additions; brick ridge stack to west wing and external brick chimney to
east side elevation. H-plan. Two storeys, attic-and cellar with chamfered
plinth and also dentilled eaves cornice to sides and rear. South front
elevation: 1:1:1 bays; rusticated end quoins to projecting wings; windows
are all round-headed with moulded architraves, keyblocks and fluted pilastered
frames and have Gothick-style sashes with intersecting traceried glazing bars;
central recessed part is also gabled and has a first floor window and beneath
it the main entrance; this has an open pediment, engaged Doric columns and
round-headed doorway with half-glazed door and traceried glazing; at the apex
of the central gable is a gryphon finial. Interior: some Cl7 wall-framing
visible in the east wing; roof has much re-used timber of C17 date including
probable ovolo mullions. First floor room to front of west wing has a barrel
roof and acanthus mouldings on door and window architraves; dog-leg staircase
with very slender turned balusters to rear of central part. There is a Cl7
timber-framed wing adjoining to the rear of the-west-wing; two framed bays
aligned east/west with single-bay cross-wing at east end adjoining rear of
main west wing; two levels; three panels from sill to wall-plate, long straight
braces in lower corners and collar and tie-beam trusses with struts. South
elevation has two circular windows with radiating glazing bars at ground floor
level; there is a central gable in which is situated a similar circular window.
At centre of roof ridge is an octagonal louvred lantern with a clockface and
domical roof with weathervane. C19 additions to rear of east wing. (VCH 3, p 123).
