2 houses, now one house. W wing probably a fragment of C16 Stocks manor
house, middle part probably c.1600, S wing early C20 for
Mrs Humphrey Ward of Stocks House. Timber frames on low red brick
plinths, red brick infill panels, plastered panels to first floor of S
wing. Steep old red tile roofs. W wing shows signs of having been
plastered externally. A large 3-cells and S extension, internal chimney,
lobby-entry plan house, 2 storeys, cellar and attics, set well back from
the road, facing E. Gabled parlour crosswing at N with a ground floor
window, 2 first floor windows, and attic window. It shares the large
internal chimney with the 2 storeys, cellar and attic hall bay. This has
a window on each floor and a gabled dormer, high on roof. The narrower
bay to S has a gable rising from the front eaves with an attic window,
and one on each floor below. The lower 1½ storeys S extension has a
window on each floor. 2- and 3-light flush casement windows with lattice
leaded glazing on upper floors, rectangular on ground floor. Tiled
gabled porch. The crosswing has a fine brick fireplace with 4-centred
arch recessed in an ovolo-moulded surround. The hall fireplace backing
onto it has a large wooden lintel. Axial floor beam in hall, and stair
position to rear of chimney stack. On upper floor an arched brace to tie
beam of framed partition to S end of hall. (RCHM Typescript:
