TL 60 17 HIGH RODING THE STREET
4/1 Wantz Cottage

GV II

Lobby-entrance house, late C17, altered in C19, extended in C20. Timber-
framed, plastered, roof mainly thatched, partly tiled. 3 bays aligned NE-SW,
with original chimney stack of one hearth at NE end of middle bay, forming a
lobby-entrance. Another original chimney stack,at rear of SW bay. Lean-to
extension to rear, C18/19. Extension to rear, single storey with attics,C20.
Single storey with attics. On ground floor, 3 C20 metal casement windows,
gabled and tiled porch. One C20 metal casement window in gabled and tiled
dormer in middle bay. Roof half-hipped at both ends. Some timber framing
exposed internally, primary straight bracing, straight tiebeams, unjowled posts.
Stop-chamfered ceiling beams. Blocked aperture for former bread oven in rear
of SW hearth, now demolished. Divided into 2 cottages in C19. Old photograph
in NMR shows it in this form, with an additional dormer to SW of present
one. Recombined into one house, c.1950, extra dormer removed, new stair
constructed.
