1905 by M H Baillie-Scott. Pair of semi-detached houses. The most famous
of the entries for the Cheap Cottage Exhibition. Based on the form of the
medieval hall house with a recessed centre and slightly projecting gabled
wings. Modern one storey extensions at north and south ends replacing the
former, deeply-swept eaves characteristic of Baillie-Scott's work. Tiled
roofs. Brick stacks with moulded caps. Timber-framed centre bay with stud
and plaster work. Roughcast walls to wings. Flat-topped dormers. Three-light
casement windows with mullions, leaded lights and tile labels. Recessed entrance
with half-glazed door. Open plan interior with a single living space, articulated
by the position of the staircase and with a deeply recessed inglenook fireplace.
Good joinery and ironmongery. Although entered for the Cheap Cottages Exhibition,
the design of Elmwood Cottages deliberately flouted the utilitarian ideals
of the competition, thus producing one of the best entries. The 2 cottages
are arranged so that they can be turned into one, cf "An Architect's Confession
of Faith" by Baillie-Scott.
