Inn, now a public house. Early C17, mentioned as the Bull Inn 1675, late
C17 brick rear wing at NW, alterations and E extension 1814 when bought
by Henry Crabb, brewer of Hitchin. Timber frame roughcast with steep red
tile roof, painted brick extensions, that at E with hipped roof. A tall
2-storeys and attics building facing S, fronting the street, with
jetties at 2 levels. 2 canted oriel windows to 1st floor step out to
support gabled dormers above the eaves with 2-light leaded casements.
Transomed windows to ground floor flanking central door. Foliated
bracket at E end of jetty. Inn Sign carried by very large gallows-like
oak bracket on front with cusped brace. Old prints show a sign on a beam
with end posts spanning the road. Very large internal chimney near E end
with axial shaft above roof with 3 flues. Projecting large W gable
chimney with 2 square shafts set diagonally. Long single-storey and
cellar wing at rear. Vast catslide rear roofslope with gabled stair
turret in middle. Exposed timbers inside and large open fireplace at E.
