Gatehouse built to contain water-engine for Hilfield Castle (q.v.).
c.1798-1799 by Jeffry Wyatt for G.Villiers. Rendered brick; roof not
visible. Picturesque Gothick. 2 storeys. Tudor arch with hood mould and
portcullis has octagonal corner tower to left with machicolations. 3
storey square fronted gatehouse to right. 1st floor sashes, 2nd floor
lancets, some blind. All with crenellated parapets. Statue under hood
mould on a corbelled base above the gate. Wing wall and octagonal pier
to left. Additions to rear. Interior not inspected. (D.Linstrum,
