Mid C18. Painted brick. Pantiled roof. Three storeys. Parapet with stone
coping. Three windows near-flush-frames, hung sashes with glazing bars. Two
single mid C19 shop fronts, reglazed with plate glass. The interior
incorporates a great deal of carved detail of a slightly earlier period, almost
certainly reused from Hotham House. Very fine staircase through three storeys,
open string, pseudo-cantilevered in upper stages, carved balusters, plain
newels, simply moulded handrail. Simpler back stairs with closed string.
Most upper floor rooms wainscotted with fielded panelling to dado height, first
floor back room has fielded panelling all over and fluted Doric pilasters
flanking chimneypiece. All doors have fielded panels and some fine brass locks
(the house belonged to a locksmith, John Tygar c1766). Fielded panelled window
seats throughout, and fielded shutters. Principal first floor room has moulded
dentilled plaster cornice and elaborate carved window architraves in the manner
of William Thornton (who was the joiner at Hotham House). Rear first floor
room has fielded panelling with Doric pilasters. One second floor room has
mixture of plain boarded partitions, reused C17 panelling and C18 fielded
panelling, bolection moulded chimneypiece with moulded cornice.
