Hall Estate Cottages
and adjoining barn.
(formerly listed as

Cottage and adjacent
barn).
G.V. II
Cottages and attached barn. C18, possibly an adaptation of
an earlier building. Coursed hammer-dressed stone with
stone slate roof. The rear is brick and there are signs of
timber framing. The two cottages are on either side of an
arched carriage opening to Ashworth Hall. The barn adjoins
to the right, has two full-height cart openings with a
lean-to between them, a cow house in the right hand portion
which extends to a wing at the rear with a hay loft above.
Elevation: The central studded oak doors have a flat arched
opening with recessed spandrels, ovolo-moulded surround and
large hoodmould. To either side is a cottage of two bays
with casement windows and square cut lintels and sills and
doorways with monolothic jambs. Stone quoins and ornate
ball finial. C17-style, cavetto moulded mullion windows
(possibly re-used) concealed on left gable by lean-to
additon, exposed timber framing to carriage entry (probably
of earlier date). The barn has circular pitching holes with
moulded architraves, vent slots, stone quoins, a king-post
roof and owl holes in the gables.
