5/208 Orchard Cottage

GV II

House. Late medieval with early/mid C16 and later alterations.
Rendered, over uncoursed limestone rubble; half-hipped thatch
roof; brick ridge stack and two C18/C19 brick to rear. Open-hall
plan with service bay to left and parlour bay to right; floor and
stack backing onto through-passage inserted in early/mid C16.
Thatched porch; C20 casements, those to upper floor in eyebrow,
dormers. C16 chamfered 2-light wood-mullioned window lighting
stairs to rear. Interior: two obscured late medieval cruck
trusses over hall and service end; parlour end has heavy
rectangular joints on thick beams. Hall has C16 quartered ceiling
with moulded beams; C16 chamfered elliptical-arched doorframe
with coverstrips to plank door between stack and winder stairs;
heavy chamfered bressummer with moulded mantleshelf over open
fireplace; chamfered and arched doorframe to parlour.
