10/100 Mathews Farm House
GV II
Farmhouse, now cottage. Probably C17 rebuild of medieval house, refenestrated and
altered late C20. Rendered over rubble and possibly cob, concrete tiled roof, rebuilt
brick stacks set in from gable end left and to right of cross passage. L-plan: 2-cell
and cross passage, it is thought that the open hall house was ceiled and north gable
end with fireplace added in the C17 when the winder stair in outshot at rear of
southern room was added and together with the stack beside cross passage. Two storeys,
3 bays; all late C20 windows, central recessed door with C20 moulded surround;
large raking buttress on south gable end at junction with outshot. Interior not seen,
said to contain chamfered lintel to north gable end fireplace, chamfered stone jambs,
curing chamber left and winder stairs right rebuilt to extend over bread oven; chamfered
beans with double step and runout stops and scroll stops; timbered framed partition to
cross passage, chamfered peaked doorframe to southern room, rear door way almost flat
peaked. The property has been documented to 1489.
(VAG Report, unpublished SRO, April 1980).
