Herring hang, c1881. Brick building in Sussex bond, tarred to rear.
Gable ended with tiled roof having 2 rows of triangular ventilation
slits. Gable ends have cambered openings with wooden doors. East
elevation has two cambered openings with wooden doors. Inside were
racks starting 8 feet from the floor up to the roof. 'Speets' (ie
wooden rods of about 3ft 6 inches long and pointed at one end) with
herrings threaded through the gill openings were placed on the racks
6 inches apart and 12 inches above each other. When the hang was
ready, a fire was lighted on the floor and a resinous smoke dried and
cured the fish. This is a rare survival of a process associated with
the fishing industry.
