The Pinfold
- II
House. Probably early C17, altered mid-C20. Timber-framing, partly
replaced by brick, rendered. L-plan. Two storeys with attic, three
bays. Facade now has 4-light C20 mullioned windows with stucco hoods.
Central bay has timber oriel above door. Clasping pilaster strips cover
corner posts. Chimney behind ridge in line with door. Interior: the
outer bays on the ground floor contain rooms with chamfered axial beams,
the left-hand one with exposed chamfered common joists. Both have C20
brick fireplaces. The right-hand room has a depressed-ogee doorhead in
the wall to the left of the fireplace, but lack of pegging suggests that
it may not be in its original position. The rear wing has a chamfered
ox-tongue stopped main beam. The framing of the rear wall of the front
range is visible within a loft over a lean-to addition in the angle
between the rear wing and this range. It is of square panels with straight
tension braces. The entrance lobby in the middle bay contains a C17 open-
well stair with turned balusters and pendant bosses, partly altered. On
the first floor the jowled principal posts of the two central tie-beam
trusses are visible and the ceiling joists are exposed. In the attic the
trusses have raking struts, and some straight wind-braces are exposed.
