Country house, now school. 1900 by J.H. Green. Gault brick with rendered
detailing and slate roofs. 3-4 storeys. North front of 12 bays on rusticated
ground floor, all corners with rendered quoins. Facade symmetrical to right
in form of 2 pedimented projections stepped out at first floor of 3 bays each,
between which is open balustraded loggia supported by 2 Tuscan columns and
2 pilasters with Ionic capitals. All windows are sashes within moulded
rendered architraves with pediments. The main pediments to facade contain
scrolled achievements. Balustraded parapet throughout. Facade to left of
3 bays with similar fenestration, one window now a door. South front
asymmetrical : 11 bays with further projecting wing to right; windows as
before; facade relieved by 4 giant order Corinthian columns off-set to left
carrying pediment with scrolled achievement. Low hipped roof studded with
rectangular stacks. Interior decoration randomly reflects C18 style : Hall
with 4 reeded and fluted timber Ionic screen to north carrying heavily moulded
architrave. Central oval plasterwork coffer depicting fruit and flowers with
4 similar flat pendentives. Half turn staircase with landings within dado
panelled well, the stairs open string with 2 irontwist balusters to each tread.
Fluted Corinthian newel posts and floral carved tread ends. Moulded mahogany
handrail. Stair well top lit from oval ribbed light within deep plaster coving
decorated with garlanded putti linked by swags. Drawing room (now Senior
Common Room) window separated by screen on 2 fluted and reeded Ionic columns
with moulded architrave. Fine moulded fan-ribbed oval plaster ceiling with
shell and chalice motifs. Remainder of principal rooms on lower floor similar.
