6/193 The Old Rectory
II
Former rectory, now house. 1854 by W.H. Knight of Cheltenham.
Coursed, squared stone with ashlar dressings, brick chimneys above
eaves, tiled roof, fish-scale coursing on right. Irregular plan,
3-bay main wing, projecting section to right of centre, 2 storeys:
2½ -storey single-bay rear projection, single-storey 'L' plan
service wing on rear. Entrance front, plinth: porch with arched
opening, moulded surround, up 5 stone steps: hoodmould, uncarved
stops: small buttress left extending front wall. Parapet gable,
large kneeler, cross-gablet apex. To right wall of projection in
same plane: 3 irregularly-spaced ogee trefoil-headed lancets,
moulded string as sill, relieving arches over: buttress on right
continues line of front wall. Set back on right: similar lancet
but with high transom, repeated in splay to canted bay end to
block, both with relieving arches over, immediately on right.
First floor moulded string throughout at window sill level: on
left of porch stepped corbels to external first-floor chimney:
finished 2 octagonal brick flues above eaves. Gable: canted
oriel on moulded stone corbel below; trefoil-headed lancet each
face with sunk spandrels, stone hipped roof. To right chimney in
angle corbelled across corner, 'L' plan brick top, Serrated
parapet gables left and to projection, cross-gablet apices, hipped
on right. Right return: canted end to main block: in splays as
noted fronted, paired similar in centre. First floor smaller
paired similar in centre only, rising into gabled dormer, stone
parapet. To right single-light window with transom, flat stone
lintel to slightly-lower ground floor: relieving arch over. Two-
light similar to right; moulded string above; 2-light similar
above: but without transom. Gabled dormer over with 2-light
lancet, trefoil ogee head, stone parapet gable. Serrated parapet
gable on right with chimney on ridge. Single-storey wing below
right, in same plane, 2-light casement with transom and flat stone
lintel: long wing projects forwards to right, single light similar
window at rear of left return: twin lancet in gable with relieving
arch over: projecting purlins to gable. Brick chimney on ridge
towards rear of wing. Interior not inspected. (Drawings at
