GV II
Barn. Mid C19. English garden wall bond brickwork; monk bond
to granary; tiled roof. Three unit: barn, central porch one side;
leanto in angle. Facade to fields, central double bonded doors,
stone hinge blocks, elliptical brick arch. Either side 2 diamond-
shaped brick grilles as air vents, set adjoining one above other:
dentil eaves. To yard, projecting gabled porch in centre, doors as
to field, but small door cut in one of large ones. Above 2 boards
for dovecote, with 2 holes over upper board for access. To left,
air vents as to field. To right later brick lean-to, on cambered
brick arches at ground level: plain eaves. Internally, stone-
paved threshing floor: 5-bay roof to barn, queen-post trusses,
iron bolts, one pair purlins, plank ridge. Windbraces to purlin
on rear over threshing floor only. King-post truss to porch,
boarded dovecote over, access door in side. Door cut in side of
porch to granary. Good, unaltered example of mid C19 barn, porch
somewhat unusual, ground floor granary on low arches very rare
feature: floor raised to keep damp out. Forms group with
house (q.v.).
