13/65 Nelfields Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse: probably C17, late C18, Flemish bond brickwork on stone
plinth; coursed, squared stone gable: tiled roof. Irregular 'L'
plan, 3-window front, 2 and 3 storeys. Entrance front: 2 bays 2
storey, set-back on right to 3 storey, with continuous roof. On
left 3 light timber mullion and transom window, iron opening
casement, projecting stone sill, flat head with brick-on-edge
lintel. To right boarded front door, glass pane in upper half,
heavy timber frame, flat head as window. In set back on right
similar window, but wider. First floor three 3-light mullioned
windows, otherwise as ground floor, but all same size. Second
floor in set back 2-light mullioned window, as below, but with iron
bars inside. Cogged eaves. Left return sets out twice; 3-light
mullioned window on second floor, shuttered internally, iron bars
outer lights, leaded-lights in centre. Plain chimney on ridge.
Right return plain chimney projecting from main building. Behind
side wall of 2-storey rear wing, 1 window per floor, with arch to
cellar opening below. Earlier brickwork to part way up first
floor, English garden wall bond: later above. End of stone gable
shows to right, 600 mm thick: shows line of earlier, steeper roof,
before eaves raised. Stone gable probably left from timber-framed
house, rebuilt or enlarged in 2 stages, eaves to rear wing raised
as third stage. Interior not inspected.
