GV II

Public House. Early C19 possibly of earlier origin, E wing
c1868, the rest largely rebuilt 1980 incorporating old facade
elements. Rouqhcast with gabled red tile roofs. 2-storeys with
1-storey E wing. 5-windows on N front to road. E wing projects
greatly and has a tarred brick plinth, shallow bow window
(renewed), small lean-to porch, pierced and faceted Gothic
bargeboard, terra cotta winged dragon on the ridge, and a gabled
square bay window with similar bargeboard on the W side.
Flanking the central hooded door are very large early C19 bow
fronted 2-storeys cast iron Gothic windows (from a house in
Cheshunt and added to the then Kings Arms Inn by Henry Teale
(1806-76) c1870 when he was developing the site as a pleasure
garden for Londoners - the present name dates from c1904). The
projecting bargeboarded gables over each window have identical
C19 large circular plaques with a naturalistic scene in relief of
tributes being offered to Britainia with lion couchant. Flush
sash windows with glazing bars (renewed). Narrow cast iron slot
window with octagonal lights over door. At the rear a 2-storeys
early C19 block, white weatherboarded with a slate roof. C16 and
C17 stained glass reset in heads of front bow windows.
